Desmodium adscendens
Desmodium adscendens is a herbaceous plant in the Fabaceae family. It comes from the equatorial zones of Africa and Latin America. It is used in traditional medicine to help combat a number of liver disorders (in particular, viral hepatitis), allergies and asthma. These properties attracted the attention of Dr. Pierre Tubéry, who studied the plant and brought it back with him to Europe.
The action of Desmodium adscendens results from the synergy between several molecules. These molecules are derivatives of tryptamine, flavonoids (vitexin and isovitexin) and saponins (including soyasaponins I and III). Desmodium limits the destruction of hepatic cells leading to a decrease in transaminase levels. Elevated transminases are quite common in cases involving liver inflammation or damage.
Desmodium adscendens also appears to be effective in preventing or alleviating certain allergic reactions. In fact, a number of ingredients in Desmodium act to decrease anaphylactic contractions, counter the action of histamine, and reduce the quantity of substances that fuel the constriction of the upper respiratory system and lungs.
